Junk Mile

In 1998 I watched the movie Without Limits; it was the life story of Steve Prefontainea middle and long distance runner. This lead to finding videos of him running and it was like watching poetry on legs.  I watched the 1972 Olympics in Munich (YouTube), the race was pure awesome. Sadly I put aside the running to raise a family and figured I can pick it up anytime.  Watch the race it’s worth it Munich 1972.

After gaining weight (250 Lbs.) and riding a couch or desk chair I decided that when I hit 50 I wanted to say “yea I run 5k’s to warm up”.  So that is what I have been trying to do, running junk miles to get stronger and faster.  As Steve says “I have to go out hard and just about lead from the start”. I think there is a force that wants to stop me; earlier this month I found out I have an inguinal hernia on my right side.  I can still run with a truss but I cannot do hard take off or train with HIIT as it could make it get strangled or drop into my testicles.

September I will be seeing the General Surgeon and hopefully not long after the surgery.  I am hoping for a winter surgery so I will be back in form the spring. For Father’s Day I received (early to cheer me up) the Nike + watch and New Balance Minimus for running at the gym.  Outside I use my Nike Lunar Edge or Reebok Zigs.  So I decided that I would record my progress here to surgery and on to my first 5k.
